Bioinformaticians seeking to provide services to working biologists are faced with the twin problems of distribution and diversity of resources. Bioinformatics databases are distributed around the world and exist in many kinds of storage forms, platforms, and access paradigms. To provide adequate services to biologists, these distributed and diverse resources have to interoperate seamlessly within single applications.
